“Will the state that I live in be able to see the traffic ticket I received in New York?”
You may think that because you’re not a resident of New York State and/or do not have a New York State driver’s license that any traffic ticket violations you are convicted of will not be seen by your home state. Think again.
45 out of the 50 states in the United States share information via two nationwide systems known as the Driver License Compact (DLC) and the Non Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). The five states that do not participate in the DLC are Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The purpose of each state’s department of motor vehicles sharing information on these exchanges is to notify the driver’s home state of any traffic-related convictions and/or suspensions that occurred in another state. According to the National Center for Interstate Compacts (NCIC) the DLC’s theme is “One Driver, One License, One Record”.
The Driver License Compact Commission maintains that “The home state would treat the offense as if it had been committed at home, applying home state laws to the out-of-state offense. The action taken would include, but not be limited to, points assessed on a minor offense such as speeding and suspension of license or a major violation such as DWI/DUI”.
In addition, even if you are not a New York resident and do not hold a New York driver’s license, any traffic violation convictions and/or suspensions that occurred in New York may affect your driving privileges while you are driving in New York.
